![]() ![]() While it is cheap, PC users should also think about any number of modern free video players that come bundled with built-in codecs for HEVC and countless other audio/video formats. HEVC Video Extensions is a very useful multimedia reproduction tool, but it should be noted that it is not free. The utility is distributed via the Windows Store, enabling all users to simplify the process of installation by simply visiting the app’s official store page and getting it there. HEVC Video Extensions for PC comes as a small package that can be installed in seconds on all modern Windows 11 and Windows 10 PCs. For devices that don’t feature hardware-accelerated decoders, these extensions will switch to “software” mode that will task the main CPU for all HEVC media decoding tasks. While Windows 10/11 does not have a built-in capability of decoding the HEVC video codec, this small multimedia utility can make any modern PC device ready for media playback.Įven more importantly, video extensions present here can also take advantage of hardware acceleration found in CPU and GPU multimedia decoding blocks, enabling both desktop and laptop PCs to automate the process of media decoding, introducing smoother playback, freeing the CPU for other tasks, and greatly reducing power consumption (which is especially useful for laptop and tablet users). In the current age where video files are shared and consumed at an ever-increasing pace, it is important to make sure that the latest technologies are introduced to all users. By installing this codec pack, users of Windows 10 and Windows 11 OS will gain the ability to have this codec ready for use no matter which video player they wish to use. Mobile phone manufacturers have also adopted this standard, enabling users who often record videos with their phone cameras to dramatically reduce video files, thus taking greater advantage of their often-limited mobile phone local storage. This advanced video standard was introduced as a replacement for the highly popular H264 standard, managing to offer the same level of visual quality all while requiring half of the data band, thus enabling content providers to either start distributing high-quality 4K videos without large file sizes or the similar quality files that can be downloaded in half a time. ![]() The cost of the HEVC extensions in the store is about 99 cents was it really worth the effort for me to write this post and you to read it? Probably not, but one thing that is for sure is that Microsoft could easily eat this cost, keep its users happy and stop forcing them to jump through hoops to have basic functionality.HEVC Video Extensions is a multimedia utility that can help users of Windows 11/Windows 10 PCs gain a native ability to reproduce videos that utilize High-Efficiency Video Coding (also known as HEVC or H265). Using PowerShell seems to skip straight to installation ignoring the store's requirement for you to have a code to redeem, I don't know if it violates any licensing. This will pop open the Microsoft Store page for 'HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer' and allow you to hit the Install button. ![]() Start ms-windows-store://pdp/?ProductId=9n4wgh0z6vhq ![]() You can install the extensions from a PowerShell session without needing to redeem a code with the following command. You used to be able to get around this by just installing the 'HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer' but conveniently those extensions are currently unavailable in the Microsoft Store. You may have clicked that download link and been disappointed to find that although you can 'Download and install' the extension Microsoft expects you to pay for the privilege. Or perhaps it can afford to, but it was too busy stuffing junk like Candy Crush into my start menu. Yes, that's right despite making a profit of more than 20 billion dollars in 2021 cash strapped Microsoft can't afford to bundle the ability to play videos inside it's plucky upstart operating system. It's the default video compression used when you're filming video on iOS and as a modern standard is of course natively supported on macOS, iOS, Android, and Windows not Windows. High Efficiency Video Coding aka HEVC aka H.265 aka MPEG-H Part 2 is a video compression standard from those nice people at the MPEG-H standards group. The HEVC Video Extension is required to display this file in full resolution. If, like me, you're both and iPhone and a Windows user you've probably come up against a friendly message telling you that. #TLDR use PowerShell to install an extension. ![]()
